Longitudinal performance trajectories in male 50-m freestyle swimming: a 2004-2025 analysis of A*finalists at the Japan Swimming Championships
BACKGROUND: Longitudinal analyses of elite sprint freestyle performance can inform talent identification, long*term athlete development, and competition planning; however, systematic descriptions of career*long trajectory types among Japanese national top-level competition swimmers are scarce. We aimed to characterize long*term performance trajectories among A*finalists at the Japan Swimming Championships (JAPAN SWIM), classify trajectory types, and derive age*related growth curves. METHODS: Annual best times recorded in the men's 50-m freestyle A-final at JAPAN SWIM from 2004 to 2025 were collected from the official record. Longitudinal performance trajectories were analysed for 18 athletes who qualified for the A-final on three or more occasions. Performance trajectory types were classified into five to seven categories based on annual best times, and age-related growth curves were constructed for nine athletes with available junior-period data. RESULTS: The Long-term Dominant type accounted for five of the nine athletes, with rapid performance improvement observed from the junior period through ages 22-24 years, followed by convergence to the low-22-second range during the elite competitive period (*24 years; Japanese record: 21.64 s). The Long-term Challenger-to-Retirement type (n = 1) competed in 12 A-finals over 13 years, demonstrating performance decline in the final career phase. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first systematic characterisation of diverse career trajectories among male 50-m freestyle A-final swimmers at the Japan Swimming Championships, offering practical implications for long-term athlete development and competitive planning.
