Baby swimming in Florianópolis, Brazil: families` perceptions of the practice

BACKGROUND: Florianópolis, located in southern Brazil, is characterized by a diversity of natural aquatic environments. Consequently, swimming is of significant importance, rendering early familiarization with aquatic environments a valuable experience. The purpose of this study was to assess how families of infants who attend baby swimming classes in Florianópolis perceive this activity; METHODS: The study adopted a descriptive-exploratory methodological approach. An online questionnaire was used, containing questions regarding the characteristics of the participants and the infants, the reasons that led families to enroll infants in swimming programs, the description of class structure, and the perceived benefits. A total of 23 family members of infants participated in the study; CONCLUSIONS: Safety was the primary reason reported for enrolling in the practice, followed by health and developmental factors. In general, classes last 30 min and are conducted by one swimming instructor. The use of diverse activities, materials, and songs was reported. Infants are encouraged to learn through imitation. The most frequently reported contents included bubble blowing in the water, water immersion, balance-challenging tasks, back floating, edge-supported locomotion, jumping from the pool edge into the water, and varied locomotor movements. The most commonly perceived benefits by families were motor development in the water, increased self-confidence during swimming lessons, water safety, motor development outside the aquatic environment, and reduction of fear of water. These findings may assist professionals in promoting baby swimming programs in accordance with family perceptions.
