The shape of the pectoralis major muscle in swimmers
In the course of anthropometric research on top sportsmen in different sports (Maas, 1974), it struck me that in nearly all crawl, butterfly, and dolphin swimmers the major pectoral muscle has a typical shape, which is characterized by the relatively great distance between the clavicle and the caudal-costal origin. The muscles show an orientation which is more longitudinal than in "normal" cases. As far as I am able to ascertain, the caudal origin is on the fifth rib and its cartilage and occasionally on the sixth rib (see Figure 1).
