From outside the top 20 to the national team: ranking trajectories of Brazilian elite swimmers
BACKGROUND: Early competitive success is often assumed to be a prerequisite for elite performance in swimming, influencing talent identification and development strategies. However, it remains unclear whether swimmers who reach the national team were consistently among the top-ranked athletes during early developmental stages. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed publicly available data from the Brazilian Aquatic Sports Confederation (CBDA). The sample included swimmers selected for the Brazilian national team between 2011 and 2024 (n = 110; 51 women and 59 men). For each athlete, age-group national ranking positions (top 20) were examined between 13 and 19 years of age in the event for which they were later selected. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and longitudinal changes were assessed using the Friedman test. RESULTS: At 13 years of age, a substantial proportion of swimmers who later reached the national team were not ranked among the top 20 (42% of females and 51% of males). The percentage of athletes within the top 20 increased progressively with age, exceeding 90% by 19 years. Among athletes consistently ranked in the top 20 (n = 48), significant longitudinal differences were observed (p < 0.001), indicating progressive performance consolidation. CONCLUSIONS: These findings challenge the widespread assumption that early top-ranking is a prerequisite for elite swimming success. Competitive performance appears to consolidate progressively across developmental stages, supporting long-term athlete development perspectives and cautioning against overreliance on early competitive ranking as a singular indicator of future elite attainment.
