From empirical intuition to nonlinear pedagogy: a 30-year research program on aquatic propulsion
(Von der empirischen Intuition zur nichtlinearen Pädagogik: ein 30-jähriges Forschungsprogramm zum Vortrieb im Wasser)
BACKGROUND: For decades, swimming technique was taught through a prescriptive approach aimed at reproducing an 'ideal' champion's stroke. In the 1990s, an alternative empirical framework identified 12 spatial and temporal factors governing upper-body propulsive efficiency. While these factors can still be demonstrated today through simple field tests (e.g., swimming with clenched fists vs. paddles), their true value lies in how they catalyzed a 30-year research program. AIM AND METHODS: This paper reviews how macroscopic coordination (Index of Coordination), mechanical efficiency (MAD-system), velocity smoothing (Intra-cyclic Velocity Variation), and fine kinetic adaptation (force spectral analysis) substantiated the initial intuition. RESULTS: Ultimately, this journey led to a paradigm shift: coordination variability is a functional adaptation to constraints. Consequently, the 12 factors are no longer taught as prescriptive rules, but manipulated as task constraints within a nonlinear pedagogical framework. CONCLUSIONS: Remaining research gaps concerning longitudinal learning dynamics and environmental transferability are discussed.
