Hydrodynamic profiling of arms-only front crawl based on isokinetic assessments and simple kinematic parameters

This study aimed to describe a new protocol for hydrodynamic profiling in front crawl swimming. A combination of isokinetic dynamometry and 2-D kinematic analysis is proposed (the IsoMAD method). The relationships between the arm stroke mechanical power (Wext), arm stroke efficiency (hp), and active drag factor (ka) with maximal swimming speed (v), and simple kinematic parameters in front crawl using the arms only were explored. Regional level swimmers (n=22) performed 25 m at maximal speed to assess simple kinematic parameters and , and an isokinetic protocol on dryland, simulating the arm stroke propulsion, to assess Wext. Propulsive power (Wprop), active drag (Da) and ka were estimated by combining dryland and in-water protocols. A stepwise regression indicated three performance prediction models: (i) including hp (R²=0.435); (ii) including hp and Wext (R²=0.705); and (iii) including hp, Wext, and
