Effect of a severe swimming training session on in-water force in young swimmers: analysis using scalar and time-series metrics

(Auswirkungen einer Schwimmtrainingseinheit im hohen Intensitätsbereich auf die Kraftentfaltung im Wasser bei jungen Schwimmern: Analyse anhand von skalaren und Zeitreihen-Metriken)

Understanding the response to a single swimming session could be essential for optimizing recovery processes during the developmental stages of swimmers. This study aimed to analyze the effect of a severe-intensity swimming training session on the in-water force changes of young swimmers. Twenty-seven age-group swimmers (14 boys, 13 girls) performed a full-tethered swimming protocol pre- and post-training session that was focused on aerobic power development. Force-time curve profiles were analyzed using scalar variables, including maximum and mean forces (Fmax and Fmean, respectively) and impulse (Imp), as well as parametrized and re-parametrized (statistical parametric mapping; SPM) and arc-length (L) metrics. Paired samples t-test was used to compare pre- and post-training measurements and Cohen`s d (d) was used as an effect size measure. Fmax (242.0 ± 53.0 vs 225.0 ± 41.7 N, p = 0.01, d = 0.53), Fmean (112.0 ± 20.7 vs 101.4 ± 19.2 N, p < 0.01, d = 1.48) and mean Imp (107.1 ± 19.7 vs 96.6 ± 18.9 N·s-1, p < 0.01, d = 1.64) were reduced after the training session. Also, a single training session significantly impaired force-time curve profiles on SPM (0.0-12.0, 25.0-27.0, 45.0-53.0 and 62.0-100.0% of the temporal cycle percentage). Moreover, parametrization reflected reductions in force values and a diminished capacity to generate and sustain force over time. Altogether, these metrics provide valuable insights for monitoring neuromuscular fatigue and optimizing recovery processes in competitive young swimmers.
