The use of swimsuits in youth categories: enhancement of athletic performance or swimming culture?
(Der Einsatz von Schwimmanzügen in Jugendklassen: Steigerung der sportlichen Leistung oder Förderung der Schwimmkultur?)
Background: Competitive swimwear encompasses multiple characteristics that extend beyond the optimization of athletic performance, incorporating cultural elements of the sport and symbolizing the athlete`s affiliation with a particular social group. Aim: This study aimed to examine the perspectives of youth swimming coaches regarding the factors that lead young swimmers to adopt technological swimsuits. Methods: The sample consisted of 10 swimming coaches working with children`s and youth categories, including 3 males and 2 females, with a mean age of 35 ± 12 years. The average duration of experience in competitive swimming was 12 ± 8.16 years. Data were collected through online interviews, and the responses were analyzed using the Content Analysis method. Results: The results found show that 6 coaches identified "performance" and 4 identified "the influence of other swimmers" as the main reasons for the use of technological swimsuits. They further reported that the use of these garments promotes a sense of "empowerment" (n = 4), although without adequate "training" (n = 3), no substantial advantages are observed. Additionally, the suits were perceived to contribute to "performance" (n = 2) through drag reduction and, in some cases, to provide benefits primarily in the "psychological" domain (n = 1). Regarding purchasing criteria, "cost" (n = 3) and "brand" (n = 2) were the most frequently cited factors. All participants indicated that the competitive environment significantly influences the desire to use such suits. Notably, one coach highlighted that athletes who do not possess them may feel at a disadvantage compared to their peers, even when better prepared physically and psychologically. Conclusions: The results suggest that the use of technological suits in youth swimming is influenced by perceived performance, peer influence, and the competitive context, indicating that their adoption involves technical, psychological, and sociocultural aspects beyond the pursuit of performance improvements.
