Analysis of the relationship between recovery, well-being state, and rating of perceived exertion in open-water swimming training sessions
(Analyse des Zusammenhangs zwischen Erholung, Wohlbefinden und der subjektiven Belastungswahrnehmung bei Schwimmtrainings im Freiwasser)
Background: Open water swimming has shown growth in the sports context, with an increase in both federated and amateur competitions. In this way, monitoring the psychophysiological state in this modality is important to understand responses to training and to optimize recovery athletes`s processes. Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between indicators of recovery, well-being states and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) across 10 open water swimming training sessions. Methods: Before each session, 10 amateur open water swimmers (45±8.75y) completed the Total Quality Recovery (TQR) scale and the Well-Being Scale (WBS), composed of fatigue, sleep quality, muscle soreness, stress, and mood. The athletes participated in open water competitions and had been training 3 to 4 times per week for at least 5 years. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the training sessions, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was recorded. After testing data normality, Spearman`s correlation test was performed using JASP software. To better understand the magnitude of the correlations, effect size (Fisher`s z) was calculated. Results: TQR showed a moderate and significant correlation with fatigue (r = 0.559; p < 0.001), a weak to moderate correlation with sleep quality (r = 0.381; p = 0.002), and a weak correlation with mood (r = 0.266; p = 0.037). The variables of the well-being scale showed moderate and significant correlations among themselves (0.429 < r > 0.535; p<0.001). RPE showed a moderate and significant correlation only with stress (r = 0.322; p = 0.011). Conclusions: It is concluded that TQR mainly reflected fatigue and sleep states in these athletes. The well-being variables demonstrated an interdependent behavior, suggesting that the athlete`s psychophysiological state should be analyzed in an integrated way. RPE was correlated only with perceived stress, indicating that the pre-training state had little influence on athletes` perception of training load during the session.
