Tethered paddling endurance indices distinguish elite from recreational surfing performance

(Ausdauerindizes beim Paddeln am Zugseil unterscheiden die Leistung von Elite- und Freizeitsurfern)

Background: In competitive swimming, a high incidence of shoulder pain resulting from the repetitive movements characteristic of the sport is observed. Aim: To investigate the relationship between weekly training volume and the incidence of shoulder joint pain in swimmers in the youth and junior categories. Additionally, the study sought to identify physical exercises adopted to prevent the onset of this pain. A qualitative-quantitative approach with a descriptive design was used. Methods: Twenty-seven swimmers, aged 15 - 19 years, who competed in the Paraná State Championship in Curitiba/Brazil, participated in the study. The research was conducted by measuring pain using the Numerical Pain Scale and a questionnaire on weekly training volume (determined by the coaches) and pain prevention practices. Results: The pain averaged 4.52 ± 2.24 points, and the weekly volume varied between 9 and 50 km (24 ± 13.61km). A weak to moderate, insignificant, negative correlation was observed between the variables (r = -0.30, p>0.05), suggesting no consistent relationship between total weekly swimming distance and shoulder pain. The most frequently reported preventive actions involved joint mobility exercises (51.9%), followed by weight training (11.1%) and combinations with other exercises, such as Pilates (3.7%) and physiotherapy (3.7%).
