European Network of Swimming Research (EUSWIM)
Swimming research is growing fast, yet the field remains scattered across institutions, methodologies, and practitioner communities. European network of Swimming performance project is a central hub where researchers, coaches, and applied scientists can connect, share evidence, and coordinate efforts. This would strengthen the scientific foundation of swimming performance and support the broader BMS mission of advancing sport science through collaboration and high-quality research. Since 2021, EUSWIM has grown into a multidisciplinary community comprising members from 18 universities across Europe and beyond, fostering collaboration through conferences, workshops, research initiatives, and coach-focused meetings. The aim of the EUSWIM is to foster collaboration among researchers, swimming coaches, and scientific advisors by providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices with the overarching goal of advancing the scientific understanding and performance outcomes in swimming. EUSWIM already brings together a diverse and active network of students, early-career researchers, seasoned academics, and practitioners who are committed to open exchange. EUSWIM would help concentrate expertise, encourage joint projects, and accelerate knowledge transfer to real-world practice. Given the increasing demand for robust, sport-specific insights in areas like biomechanics, physiology, training load, and open-water performance, EUSWIM would give a timely and forward-looking platform to support growth in aquatic sport science. A key component of this initiative is the integration of elite coaching perspectives to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Beyond establishing a scientific network, EUSWIM has developed several practical initiatives to facilitate knowledge transfer between research and coaching. Since 2021, the group has organized international conferences, annual meetings, and collaborative activities involving researchers and practitioners from multiple countries. A particularly relevant milestone was the Swimming Coaches Meeting in 2024, which specifically focused on understanding the real-world needs of coaches and identifying priority areas where scientific research can provide practical solutions. EUSWIM has created opportunities for sharing best practices, discussing performance challenges, and generating research questions directly informed by pool-deck experience. Last initiative was the Swimming Special Interest Group (EUSWIM), established within the European College of Sport Science (2026). These initiatives demonstrate the group's commitment to reducing the gap between scientific knowledge and coaching practice while promoting evidence-based decision-making in swimming. EUSWIM networkis a free, open research and academic platform for anyone interested in swimming science - from students and early-career researchers to seasoned coaches and scientific advisors. Its mission is to foster a peaceful, collaborative environment where people can discuss ideas, team up on projects, and address challenges in swimming performance and allied fields
