Pushing the outliers further: performance science with world-class swimmers
(Die Spitzenathleten noch weiter vorantreiben: Leistungswissenschaft mit Weltklasse-Schwimmern)
This paper discusses how performance science can support immediate decisions while generating cumulative knowledge in world-class swimming. The proposal combines five foundations with a hierarchical mechanistic framework that links underlying determinants to clean-swimming time. First, coaches and athletes are treated as the primary stakeholders, and their observations are regarded as potential expressions of phenomena requiring investigation. Second, the scientific literature guides method selection and mechanistic interpretation without assuming that findings derived from group averages predict outlier performance. Third, questions and measures are prioritized according to their plausible relevance to race time, particularly clean-swimming performance. Fourth, measures used to inform decisions must demonstrate adequate validity, reliability, and sensitivity, regardless of whether publication is intended. Fifth, findings are delivered across two timescales. Rapid feedback characterizes the athlete`s current profile and supports immediate decisions, whereas standardized longitudinal monitoring allows evidence to accumulate across seasons under comparable procedures and supports time-series and retrospective analyses. Findings are returned to practice through reports, conversations, and educational activities. Although publication is not a required outcome, it is encouraged because manuscript preparation requires continued engagement with current knowledge, while peer review provides external scrutiny that may improve both the work and the performance scientist over time. The framework orders questions, while the five foundations guide practice. This approach cannot isolate every cause or guarantee improvement, but supports plausible rather than definitive conclusions
