Developing aquatic competence: a conceptual and pedagogical perspective for swimming teaching
BACKGROUND: Swimming teaching has traditionally been associated with the acquisition of formal stroke techniques. Although stroke learning remains important, this perspective may be insufficient to prepare learners to interact with different aquatic environments safely, autonomously, and meaningfully. Aquatic competence offers a broader framework by including motor, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and environmental dimensions of aquatic learning. METHODS: This paper presents a conceptual and pedagogical perspective based on selected literature related to aquatic competence, ecological dynamics, skill acquisition, constraints manipulation, instructional strategies, and assessment of aquatic learning. The analysis was organized around five pedagogical axes: (i) aquatic competence as a central pillar, (ii) the teacher as mediator and safety advocate, (iii) repetition and exploration, (iv) individual-task-environment interactions, and (v) progression indicators. RESULTS: The synthesis suggests that knowing how to swim should not be reduced to the execution of formal strokes. Rather, it should involve the ability to move, breathe, float, remain at the surface, make decisions, regulate behavior, and adapt to different aquatic situations. From this perspective, the teacher should design meaningful tasks, manipulate constraints, promote exploration, and monitor progression beyond technical performance. CONCLUSIONS: Aquatic adaptation is proposed as a pedagogical pathway for developing aquatic competence. Contents such as discovery of the aquatic environment, breathing, floating, active body support in water, gliding, jumping, rotation, and basic propulsion can be organized as progressive experiences that help learners build a safer, more autonomous, competent, and meaningful relationship with water.
