Changes in force and symmetry of young swimmers over a full competitive season and training cessation

(Veränderungen von Kraft und Symmetrie bei jungen Schwimmern während einer vollen Wettkampfsaison und bei Trainingsausfall)

The present study aimed to analyse the effects of a competitive season and detraining in force and symmetry of young competitive swimmers. Nine young swimmers, six boys and three girls (12.0±0.8 years, 48.1±8.5 kg of body mass, 156.6±7.9 cm of height), were evaluated over a competitive season followed by detraining (i.e., five testing moments; Mi). The swimmers were instructed to perform two maximum repetitions of 25 m at front crawl (full-body). The subsequent peak force (SFPEAK, in N) for the dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) hand was measured using a differential pressure system (Aquanex 4.1, STR, USA). The symmetry index (SyI, %) was calculated from the force data. Repeated measures ANOVA followed by the Bonferroni post-hoc test was computed to analyse the variation between the Mi (p?0.05). The percentage of variation (?) between Mi was also considered. Results showed a moderate time effect in FPEAK D and SyI. The pairwise comparisons reveal differences between M1-M4 in FPEAK D (M1: 46.6±13.0; M4: 66.3±18.2; p = 0.01, d = 1.3), and between M4-M5 in SyI (M4: 66.3±18.2; M5: 10.7±5.6; p = 0.04, d = 1.7). So, younger swimmers' force seems to remain similar after 54 weeks, however, an increase in the force of the dominant side seems to occur before training cessation. Plus, a competitive annual training plan seems to impose an increase in the SyI (i.e., asymmetric motion), while a more symmetric motion is seen after training cessation.
