Variance in front crawl load-velocity testing using fixed or individual loads

(Abweichung bei der Prüfung der Kraft-Geschwindigkeit im Kraulen mit festen oder individuellen Lasten)

Load-velocity profiling can be used to assess swimming specific strength and velocity capabilities and determine training objectives. When establishing load-velocity profiles it is important to apply loads to the swimmer which impose a large velocity decrease (vdec) between the lightest and heaviest trial. Also, it is important not to use a load that is too heavy as it could inhibit a consistent stroke pattern. A previous study established a reliable protocol with vdec of more than 50% for males and 40% for females in front crawl with fixed loads (Olstad et al., 2020). However, the study found large individual differences, and stroke frequency (SF) was not investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether assigning individual loads would impose a large vdec, but with less inter-individual variability and a consistent SF.
