Physiological based training zones
The establishment of accurate training zones for developing performance in individual, cyclic and continuous sports, like swimming, has been debated for many decades. Aiming for more objective data to complement coaches knowhow, experience and intuition, exercise monitoring is decisive for accurate training load prescription, involving decisions regarding intensity, duration, frequency and exercise mode. Monitoring swimmers performances increased even more its importance with the appearance of new technologies, such as the portable heart rate (HR) monitors, blood lactate concentrations ([La-]) analysers and oxygen uptake (VO2) apparatus, justifying a new paradigm concerning the traditionally used training zones.
